What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, in plain English.

AEO is the practice of making your products and brand citable inside AI-generated answers. When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini "what's the best handmade gift for a gardener," AEO is what decides whether your product is in the reply. It's not a keyword trick, it's making your product data readable, consistent, and trusted enough for an assistant to name you with confidence.

AEO is making your facts clean enough for AI to quote. When your page reads clearly, the answer doesn't just find you, it names you and pulls your own words in as the source.

The shift

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Search used to hand you a list. AI hands you an answer. That one change rewrites the rules of getting found.

When buyers ask an assistant about a purchase, they don't get ten blue links to sift through, they get a synthesized recommendation: a short list of specific products, described and often linked. AEO is the discipline of earning a place on that shortlist.

Here's why it matters more than it sounds. In traditional search, ranking eighth still meant some visibility, a sliver of clicks trickled down the page. An AI answer has no eighth position. You're either named in the response or you're invisible. Inclusion becomes binary.

You're one of the three named, or you're nowhere.
Traditional search rewards ranking. Answer engines reward inclusion, and inclusion is all-or-nothing.
The vocabulary

AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO, what's actually different?

Three acronyms, one family. SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list a human clicks. AEO, and the closely-related GEO (generative engine optimization, the term you'll see more in B2B), optimize your facts to be extracted, trusted, and merged into a synthesized answer.

SEO's currency is position: where your link sits. AEO's currency is citation: whether the answer names you, quotes your facts, and links your page. They overlap, both reward clean, trustworthy content, but the target and the metric differ.

SEO makes you findable by people scrolling. AEO makes you quotable by machines answering. Keep your SEO healthy, then add the answer layer on top.

“SEO makes you findable. AEO makes you quotable. In 2026 you need both.”

The mechanism

How do AI engines choose which products to recommend?

Roughly: an assistant takes the shopper's request, fans it out into sub-queries, searches for each, collects from the sources it can read and trust, then merges everything into a shortlist. It extracts facts first, then composes the answer. Confidence wins, and low confidence means exclusion, not a lower rank.

1
Can a machine read it?
Fast, clean pages the crawler can actually get through. Clutter and heavy scripts lower its confidence, and low confidence means you get skipped.
2
The facts, filled in
Price, availability, materials and size written where a machine can read them, not trapped in a photo. (This labeling is what people mean by "schema.")
3
Answers, not sales copy
Short, factual blurbs that match what buyers actually ask: what it is, who it's for, how it compares, what it costs.
4
Others vouch for you
A few consistent mentions elsewhere. A claim backed up in two places beats a bold one made only on your own page.
Extraction confidencethreshold to be cited
Below the line, the engine skips you rather than ranking you lower. AEO is the work of pushing your pages over that line.
Four factors decide whether an assistant is confident enough to name you.

The marketplace problem

Why do Etsy and Shopify listings underperform in AI search?

Marketplace pages are built to convert humans, which makes them hard for machines to read. Reviews widgets, upsell modules, scripts, and lazy-loaded galleries bury the exact facts an assistant needs. Good products end up simply illegible.

The fix isn't to make your human page worse. It's to give the machine its own perfect version, a clean, structured, published twin of the page, built to be extracted.

The work

The complete AEO checklist for online sellers

Fourteen things move the needle. The first eight are effort, not money, do them this week and you'll make real progress for free. The last six are infrastructure most sellers run out of time for; that's the part Beacon automates.

Foundation · DIY

Do these yourself, this week

Free. Mostly an afternoon of editing. Biggest bang for zero budget.
  • Let the AI crawlers in, check they're not blocked (in your robots.txt file).
  • Tell Bing about your site too, not just Google, a lot of assistants lean on it.
  • Move every product fact out of images and into real text.
  • Name products the way people actually ask, "organic cotton sleep mask," not "The Luna."
  • Label your product facts so machines can read them, price, availability, the basics (Product & Offer schema).
  • Tell AI who your brand is, on an About page it can read (Organization schema).
  • Answer real buyer questions in plain Q&A (with FAQ markup).
  • Leave crawlers a simple map of your site (an emerging file called llms.txt).
Infrastructure · Beacon does it

Where most sellers run out of time

Ongoing, technical, per-product. This is the layer Beacon builds and keeps current.
  • A dedicated, machine-readable page for every single product.
  • Content that answers what buyers really ask, from "what is it" to "which should I pick."
  • Clear alt text & image details for picture-first assistants.
  • Prices and stock kept in sync automatically as they change.
  • Tracking that shows every visit an AI sends your way.
  • Catalog data an AI shopping agent can act on (Beacon's AUX Protocol).
Work the DIY list this week, it's real progress and costs nothing. The infrastructure column is where Beacon does the work for you.

Agentic commerce: what's coming next

The step beyond AI recommending you is AI acting for the shopper, agents that research, compare, and increasingly transact on a buyer's behalf. Being ready means the boring, durable stuff: stable URLs, machine-readable offers and policies, live availability, and clean checkout routing back to your store.

Visible

An assistant can read and recommend you, you make the shortlist when a person asks.

Next

Operable

An agent can act on you, parse your offers and policies, check live stock, and route a purchase to your checkout.

The same readiness that gets you recommended today is what makes you operable by agents tomorrow.
The through-line

Every section points the same direction: be readable.

Whether it's a shopper's assistant today or a buying agent tomorrow, the winning move is the same, clean, complete, consistent, corroborated product data. Do it by hand with the checklist above, or let Beacon build and publish it for you, free for shops under 20 products, for good. We built Beacon on a simple belief: every seller, whatever their size, deserves a place in the AI answers today, and in the agentic marketplace next.
